How Invisalign Works

Patient holding an Invisalign clear aligner tray

Invisalign foregoes the need for metal brackets and wires and instead adjusts your teeth in a much more inconspicuous way. The plastic aligners used during the process are transparent and thus practically invisible when worn on your teeth. They need to be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours every day, but you can take them off during meals, meaning your diet won’t be limited during the treatment. Most of the time, Invisalign in Northeast Philadelphia will dramatically improve your smile in about 12 to 18 months.

Who Can Invisalign Help?

In addition to being reliable, convenient, and discreet, Invisalign is versatile. As a result, patients with numerous orthodontic problems – from overcrowded teeth to open bites – can get the smile of their dreams without the metal! To learn more about the uses of clear aligners, keep reading!

Crowded Teeth

Simply put, when your teeth are aligned properly, you’ll have a much easier time brushing them and chewing efficiently. If your teeth are currently overlapped, crooked, or tilted out of position, then we can move them into their proper places with clear aligners, improving multiple aspects of your smile. Plus, you won’t have to wait long – the average treatment timeline is only 12-18 months!

Gaps Between Teeth

Spaced out teeth can also negatively impact multiple aspects of your smile – from how it looks to how it functions. That’s why we recommend using Invisalign to close the gaps. With the clear, virtually undetectable aligners, we’ll gently guide your teeth into their properly aligned positions. Plus, you’ll be able to watch your teeth get straighter and straighter with each tray!

Overbite

An overbite is when the upper teeth jut out beyond the lower ones more than they should. Like the other orthodontic problems on this list, the health, appearance, and function of your smile can suffer as a result, which is why we want to bring your bite into proper alignment sooner rather than later. If you’re a candidate, we can do that with Invisalign!

Underbite

Do your lower teeth sit in front of your upper teeth? This bite problem is known as an underbite and, in addition to the aesthetic drawbacks, it can take a toll on your oral health and your chewing patterns. For all of those reasons, we recommend coming in for an orthodontic consultation. That way, we can assess the severity of your case and determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign.

Crossbite

If your bite isn’t aligned properly because some of your lower teeth sit in front of your upper teeth, then you can experience numerous problems – from chronic jaw pain and digestive issues to difficulty smiling confidently. The good news is that, with the help of rubber bands, buttons, and other orthodontic accessories, Invisalign clear aligners can improve the alignment of your teeth and your bite.

Open Bite

Your upper and lower teeth should come together evenly when you bite down. If they don’t because there is space in the front or back of your mouth, then you might have an open bite. Since this orthodontic problem can take a toll on your smile in more ways than one, we strongly recommend coming to our Philadelphia dental office to find out if you’re a candidate for Invisalign.

No wires, no brackets, no problems! Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, so you can confidently smile during treatment. Whether at work, school, or out with friends, no one will know you’re wearing your trays. When you’re busy trying to get ahead in social and professional circles, discretion matters. Invisalign delivers a sleek, subtle solution for straightened teeth.

Comfort You Can Count On

Traditional braces can poke and irritate your lips and cheeks, but Invisalign trays are custom designed to fit your mouth perfectly. The smooth, flexible plastic ensures they’re gentle on your mouth, so you can focus on your day, not your trays. In general, the only discomfort you may experience during your treatment is during the transition between sets. For a short time, this can make your teeth sensitive, but this is a sign that it’s working!

A True Confidence Booster

Imagine how you'll feel knowing that when others look at you, they'll see a perfect smile brimming with confidence!

Crafted with Dental Hygiene in Mind

Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, making brushing and flossing a breeze. You won’t need to buy special tools to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Simply remove your aligners after every meal, brush, floss, and clean your aligners with lukewarm water or cleaning crystals. It’s that easy!

Adjustments Made Easy

Follow-up appointments are quick at around 15 to 30 minutes, typically spaced out every 6–8 weeks. There’s no need for wire tightening or bracket adjustments—just a simple progress check and receiving your new aligner set. At our Philadelphia office, we streamline the process, so your Invisalign treatment is as convenient as it is effective.

Treatment Without Interruptions

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

In order to give you an accurate estimate of the price, we need to assess the complexity of your case. From there, we can determine the number of aligners you need, if additional orthodontic accessories need to be added to your treatment plan, and other important information that impacts the cost. Of course, we will also review the financial solutions we offer before the end of your consultation, including dental insurance and flexible financing.

Invisalign FAQs

Will I Need Invisalign Attachments?

Attachments are small bumps that are placed on the teeth. Their purpose is to aid the orthodontic process by serving as anchors for the Invisalign aligners, allowing them to apply force to the right areas in order to help the teeth move as intended.

Not every Invisalign patient will need attachments. However, they may be required if you are suffering from more complex orthodontic issues. Our team can examine your smile in order to determine whether attachments will be necessary in your case. Note that the number of attachments used can vary depending on your unique circumstances, and it may even change depending on how the treatment plays out.

Can You Eat with Invisalign Aligners In?

You should not try to eat anything while your aligners are still in your mouth. Doing so could end up damaging the aligners as well as exposing them to foods that could potentially stain them. On top of that, you will put excessive amounts of pressure on your teeth, which can cause problems in the long run.

As such, when the time comes to enjoy a meal or a snack, you should take your aligners out of your mouth. Make sure that they’re safely stored in their case, and remember to put them back in once you’re done eating.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

Invisalign is more comfortable than many other orthodontic treatment options because it involves smooth plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. That said, the treatment still involves putting small amounts of pressure on your teeth in order to move them. As such, you are likely to experience some slight soreness whenever you switch to a new aligner.

Any discomfort that you experience should eventually fade over time once your mouth has had a chance to adjust to your aligners. Until then, you can take over-the-counter pain medication or use a cold compress if you need help staying comfortable.

Does Invisalign Give You a Lisp?

Invisalign can sometimes give you a lisp at first. The presence of the aligners can change the way your tongue moves when you’re trying to pronounce certain words, resulting in a slight change in your speech. Most of the time, the lisp will go away after a few weeks. You can speed up the adjustment process simply by spending more time talking, thus helping your tongue learn how it needs to move while you’re wearing your aligners.

What Should I Do If My Invisalign Aligner Broke?

The answer depends on what kind of damage has occurred. If there’s only a hairline crack, you may be able to keep using your aligner as long as you’re extra careful when removing it and putting it on your teeth. For more extensive damage, you should call our office to let us know what happened. We’ll let you know what you should do next depending on the circumstances.

Sometimes you may need to go back to wearing a previous aligner until a replacement can be made. However, if you were due to switch to the next aligner in three days or fewer, you may be able to simply make the change early.
